Durham University’s Dr Craig Barclay delves further into our theme of ‘heroism’ and explores the extraordinary life of Muriel Thompson.

Dr Craig Barclay is Head of Museums, Exhibitions & Galleries at Durham University.

Having previously held posts at Aberdeen University, the Royal Mint Museum, the Yorkshire Museum and Hull & East Riding Museum, Craig Barclay joined Durham University in 2005 to lead its museums.  Today he has responsibility for the University’s Oriental Museum, Museum of Archaeology, Durham Castle Museum, Art Collection, Biological Science Collection and exhibitions team.

Internationally, Craig has contributed to the planning of major museum development projects in West Asia and has collaborated with UNESCO and other partners on multiple projects in Nepal, Sri Lanka and East Asia.

This topic is of particular interest to Craig – his PHD thesis focused on the subject of civilian bravery in the long 19th century and outside of the workplace, Craig is a governor of the royal humane society and Secretary of the Lifesaving Awards Research Society
